Grand Depart: Albania

Against traditions, the 2025 Giro d’Italia will start outside of Italian boundaries, with Albania staging the Grande Partenza. This counts as the fifteenth Giro starting outside of Italy. Starting on May 9, the 160-kilometer course from Durrës to Tirana has hilly terrain that would be suited for breakaway experts. May 10, the next day, offers a 13.7 km individual time trial within Tirana that provides early understanding of the form of the time trialists. Completing the Albanian trifecta, the third stage on May 11 runs a 160 km circuit starting and concluding in Vlorë, with a major test from the climb of Qafa e Llogarasë (7.4% grade).

Southern Italy and Initial Challenges

Resting on May 12, the peloton moves to southern Italy. Stage 4 on May 13 travels the scenic Apulian terrain from Alberobello to Lecce over 187km. Linking Ceglie Messapica to Matera, known for its prehistoric cave homes, the 145km fifth stage on May 14 With its great distance, a strong 226km sixth stage on May 15 tests endurance as riders from Potenza travel from Potenza to Naples Over 168km, Stage 7 on May 16 rises from Castel di Sangro to Tagliacozzo (Marsia), presenting the first major alpine difficulties. The week ends with Stage 8 on May 17, a 197km path from Giulianova to Castelraimondo, and Stage 9 on May 18, covering 181km from Gubbio to Siena, thereby reflecting the gravel areas evocative of the Strade Bianche classic.

Central Italy and Time Trials

Following a second rest day on May 19, the race picks back up with Stage 10 on May 20, a 28.6km individual time trial from Lucca to Pisa where experts may take advantage of the level parcours. Stage 11 on May 21 offers undulating terrain that may inspire breakaways from Viareggio to Castelnovo ne’ Monti. Probably favouring sprinters, the 172km twelfth stage on May 22 links Modena to Viadana (Oglio-Po). Stage 13 on May 23, a 180km path from Rovigo to Vicenza, follows Stage 14 on May 24, which travels into Slovenia and spans 186km from Treviso to Nova Gorica/Gorizia, thereby reflecting the Giro’s worldwide appeal. Stage 15 on May 25 marks the end of the week; this demanding 214 km race from Fiume Veneto to Asiago tests riders with its length and height fluctuations.

Northern Italy and Mountainous Tests

After the last rest day on May 26, Week 3 brings in the critical uphill sections. From Piazzola sul Brenta to San Valentino (Brentonico), Stage 16 on May 27 covers 199km with difficult ascents. From San Michele all’Adige to Bormio, the 154 km seventeenth stage on 28 May included the famous Mortirolo climb, a furnace for candidates for general classification. Before the last severe challenges, Stage 18 on May 29 provides a break from the 144 km course from Morbegno to Cesano Maderno. While Stage 20 on May 31, a 203 km journey from Verrès to Sestriere (Vialattea), features the summit of Colle delle Finestre, hailed as the ‘Cima Coppi’ of the 2025 Giro, the final Stage 19 on May 30 spans 166 kilometres from Biella to Champoluc.

Finale in Rome

June 1 marks the end of the Giro d’Italia 2025 with Stage 21, a 141 km round within Rome. This last chance for triumph gives sprinters as well as honours the rich tapestry of Italian history and culture. The 2025 Giro d’Italia offers a gripping ending to a race that combines legacy with unrelenting athleticism as riders negotiate the legendary paths of Eternal City.
